Birth Through Knowledge (aka BTK) was a Canadian hip-hop/rock band best known for their 1998 single "Peppyrock."

History

The roots of BTK began with a chance meeting of Lo-Ki and Stone Groove on a subway in 1993.[1] Their early musical influences were Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash.[1] The group released an EP titled Birth Through Knowledge in 1995.[1][2]

BTK first came to national attention when "Corncob Pipe" was included on the sampler disc that Korn released alongside Follow the Leader and they won the 1997 MuchMusic Best Independent Video Award for "Superchile" after the song had been in heavy rotation on the station. They became the first indie band ever to open the main-stage at Edgefest '97.[3]

After signing to the now-defunct Ignition Records (an alternative rock label affiliated with Tommy Boy Records), BTK released their only full-length album, also titled Birth Thru Knowledge, in 1998.[4] That year, they opened for Beastie Boys,[5] Kid Rock,[6] and played several dates with Our Lady Peace, including Summersault Festival in Shediac, New Brunswick.[7][8][9] Also, their music video for "Peppyrock" was nominated for MuchMusic Best Video.

BTK was nominated for a Juno Award in 1999 in the Best Alternative Album category (ultimately losing to Rufus Wainwright).[10] The band's last known performance was at the Warehouse in Toronto in December 1999.

Current

While drummer Matt DeMatteo was in the band, he also worked as a recording engineer. His studio work got so busy he left the band in 1998. After working for two recording studios, he opened Record High Productions and has run it since December 2000.

Bassist Adam Carlo returned to his previous thrash metal band (that includes one of his brothers) Razor in 2002.[11]

Turntablist DJ Spinz continues to DJ in addition to being art director for Sudden Def Recordings and part-owner of the promotion company Soul In Motion.[6]

Drummer Sam Cino continues to play drums in central Ontario.[12]
