Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri (BIT Sindri) is a Public Engineering and Research Institution in Sindri, Jharkhand, India. Established in 1949, BIT Sindri is one of the oldest Engineering and Technological Institute in India.

History

The first Indian Institute of Technology of Independent India was proposed to be earlier set up at Sindri, Jharkhand (then Bihar). However, the then Government of Bihar refused the proposition of setting-up a new Institute when B.I.T.-Sindri was already about to be established. Proposals for conversion of B.I.T. Sindri to Indian Institute of Technology were made which were subsequently turned down. Later, the land was sanctioned in West Bengal, in Kharagpur. Thus with the efforts of renowned academician, Prof. D.L. Deshpande, B.I.T. Sindri was ready to be established.

BIT Sindri was established on November 17, 1949 as College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Patna, but shifted to Sindri a year later.[1]. Since then, the Institute was known as Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri. The Institute was renamed to "Birsa Institute of Technology" after the state of Bihar partitioned in to present day Bihar and Jharkhand.[2]

Academics

The Institute was affiliated with Vinoba Bhave University until 2017. 2018 onwards, the Institute is affiliated to Jharkhand University of Technology (JUT), Ranchi, the foundations of which were laid down by the former Hon'ble President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. All courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education.[1] The Institute currently houses ten departments of engineering and three in natural sciences.

Currently, postgraduate students are admitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering only. Admission to undergraduate courses are solely based on ranks in Jharkhand Combined Competitive Engineering Entrance Examination, popularly known as the JCECE. The conducting authority for JCECE is Jharkhand Combined Competitive Entrance Examination Board, Ranchi. [3]

Campus

The Institute campus spreads over an area of 450 acres (1.8 km2) of land, located near the eastern bank of Damodar River.[1] The campus is fully residential, both for faculty as well as the students. What makes the BIT-S Campus different from other Institutes is the lush greenery and sprawling fauna and flora spread across the Institute.

Students are housed in a total of 26 Hostels for both Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Programs. Construction for newer hostels are underway too.
