William Alex Fraser QSO (28 July 1924 – 13 January 2001) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party.

Biography

Early life and career

Fraser was born on 28 July 1924. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War II. In 1947 he married his wife Dorothy, and had two children together.[2]

In the 1950s Fraser was a member of the Dunedin City Council.[2]

He represented the Dunedin electorate of St Kilda from 1957 to 1981, when he retired. He was Dunedin's longest-serving MP.[2]

He was a Cabinet Minister, and was Minister of Defence from 1974 to 1975 in the Third Labour Government.

Later life and death

In the 1992 Queen's Birthday Honours Fraser was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for public services.[3] He died in Dunedin in 2001,[4] and his ashes were buried in Andersons Bay Cemetery.[5]
