Bikroy.com is a classified advertisements website operating in Bangladesh. Bikroy.com is available in English and Bengali.

Overview

Bikroy.com was launched in 2012 and has sections dedicated to private and business advertisements for cars and vehicles, property, electronics, home appliances and personal items, sport and hobby items, and jobs, among others.

Classified advertisements are currently placed on Bikroy.com free of charge and remain on the site for a period of 60 days. Bikroy.com is available in English and Bengali.

The site came into the local media spotlight following a formal press conference event held in Dhaka on 18 October 2012.[2]

Memberships

Bikroy launched membership services in May 2016, which allowed users to have a dedicated page of their own with business details, photos and all their advertisements. Members could post extended numbers of advertisements through different membership packages and receive free promotions, shop stickers, business cards and a dedicated team for assistance.[3]

Bump Up

Bump Up moves a posted advertisement to the top of the regular ad listings once a day for seven days. Throughout the day, the ad moves down the pages as usual until the next Bump Up the following day. This is similar to posting a new advertisement everyday and can get advertisements up to five times or more views than regular ads.[4][5]

Top Ad

Up to two Top Ads show up at the top of every ad listing page and are visibly distinct from regular advertisements. Top Ads look bigger, are highlighted in yellow and are clearly marked as "Top Ad". Top Ads are also simultaneously added as regular advertisements and are thus eligible for a daily Bump Up promotion.[4][5]

Advertisers can purchase banner placements on the desktop, mobile, and app versions of the site.

History

2012

On 18 October 2012, Bikroy was formally launched in a press conference held in Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka but had begun operations in June earlier that year.[2] The story was covered by several major newspapers in the country, including Prothom Alo,[6] Kaler Kantho[7] and The Daily Star.[8] In November 2012, Bikroy was named as the "Country's first bilingual classified website" by The Daily Star[8] as it supported Bengali and English languages. In December 2012, it was voted by Prothom Alo and Asia News 24 as "the highest visited classified advertisement site in Bangladesh".[9]

2013

The year 2013 saw Bikroy become one of the top 10 most popular Bangladeshi websites.[10] "Bikroy.com" was the 4th most searched keyword in Bangladesh that year on Google.[11] The company gained over 500,000 fans on Facebook.

2014

Through a collaboration with Robi, a Zero Rating campaign was also released that year thus enabling free browsing of Bikroy through the operator.[12] During this year, the company opened a total of five offices in Bangladesh and the their Facebook page reached 2,000,000 fans.

2015

The launch of Bikroy application on iOS and Android was one of the major milestones that year.[13] Bikroy also partnered with Facebook and Internet.org to enable free browsing of Bikroy.com on the internet through the Free Basics service.[14] Another major milestone for the company was the offer of a pre-order and delivery service for sacrificial animals on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. This was the first time live Qurbani animals were ever sold online in Bangladesh.[15]

2016

This year the company launched a Membership service for small businesses, allowing them to advertise their products under their own page on Bikroy.[3] Bikroy was ranked in the top three, right after Facebook and Google, by a Millward Brown survey on top of mind preference conducted on over a thousand Bangladeshi internet users, marking the second time the company ranked in the top 3 in the last 2 years.[16]

2017

Over the year 2017, Bikroy introduced their online job portal and entered an agreement with one of the ride sharing apps in Bangladesh, Pathao, as its official recruitment partner.[17] In the annual Kantar Millward Brown survey, Bikroy lost its 3rd position rank to YouTube and is currently ranked 4th this year followed by Facebook, Google, and YouTube in Bangladesh.[18] Keeping its promise on gender parity with the #HeForShe campaign, Bikroy grew its workplace female employee ratio by 7% from the previous year as a part of their Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) signatories – a collaboration between UN Women and the UN Global Compact.[19]

In 2017, Bikroy partnered with ICT Division, LICT and BCC to organize the Dhaka IT-ITES Job Fair in February.[20] It also hosted a customer competition in association with Minister Hi-Tech Park Limited to promote its online cattle market with the hashtag #BiratHaat.[21] In an effort to counter the frailties of online shopping such as fake products & fraudulent transactions, it has enhanced its ad account verification process & placed bans on duplicate/replica products.[22]

Corporate social responsibility

Bikroy joined the global list of Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) signatories – a collaboration between UN Women and the UN Global Compact. It joined the HeForShe movement in 2015.[23][24][25]

Achievements

  1. In 2016, Bikroy for the second time in a row was ranked in the top three internet sites in Bangladesh by Milward Brown's top of mind (TOM) survey. The survey was conducted on 1008 local internet users in Bangladesh.[26]
  2. Bikroy partnered with a2i in August 2016 to implement e-commerce services, establish training institutes and create support for developing polytechnic skills for the rural people of Bangladesh.[27]
  3. Bangladesh Brand Forum (BBF) awards Bikroy as the Best Online Classified Website 2016.[28]
