Bhogilal Jayachandbhai Sandesara (13 April 1917 – 18 January 1995) (Gujarati: ભોગીલાલ જયચંદભાઈ સાંડેસરા) was a literary critic, scholar and editor from Gujarat, India. He was a scholar of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Old Gujarati language. He also contributed to the field of historical research. He was appointed as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1987.

Life

Bhogilal Sandesara was born on 13 April 1917 in Patan, a city in Gujarat. After matriculation in 1935, he worked on the editorial team of the Gujarat Samachar and Prajabandhu, Gujarati periodicals, from 1935 to 1937. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1941 from Gujarat College and Master of Arts in 1943 from Gujarat Vidhya Sabha with Gujarati and Sanskrit subjects. He worked with B. J Vidyabhavan, Ahmedabad as a lecturer and researcher of Ardha-Magadhi language from 1943 to 1950. He received a Ph.D. in 1950 for his research work Mahamatya Vastupalnu Sahityamandal tatha Sanskrit Sahityama Teno Falo and joined M. S. University, Vadodara where he served as a professor of Gujarati and head of the Gujarati department until his retirement in 1975.[1]

He was the director of Oriental Research Institute (known as Prachya Vidya Mandir) from 1958 to 1975. During this period, he worked as an editor of Swadhyaya, a journal of the institute and Gujarati quarterly. He also served as an editor of Gujarati monthly Buddhiprakash. He was appointed as the president of History & Archaeology department of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad's 59th Adhiveshan held at Nadiad in 1955. He also served as the president of Prakrit languages and Jain religion department in Akhil Bharat Prachyavidya Paridhad held at Bhuwaneshwar in 1959. In 1987, he was elected as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Paridhad.[1]

He died on 18 January 1995.[2]

Works

Bhogilal Sandesara made several contributions to the fields of Indian archaeology, Indian culture, Gujarat history and culture, and medieval Indian literature. He was a scholar of several languages like Sanskrit, Prakrit, Ardha-Magadhi and Old Gujarati.[1] He was also a scholar of Jain religion, and studied the art and sculpture of India. He also edited a few unpublished manuscripts of medieval Gujarati literature.[3]

His research works in history include Vaghelaonu Gujarat (1939), Itihas ni Kedi, Jyesthimall Jnati ane Malla Puran (1948), Jagannathpuri ane Orissana Puratan Avashesho (1951), Jain Agam Sahityama Gujarat (1952) and Mahamatya Vastupalnu Sahityamandal tatha Sanskrit Sahityama Teno Falo (1957). Vaghelaonu Gujarat is a study of the socio-political and cultural life of Gujarat during the reign of Vaghela kings while Mahamatya Vastupalnu Sahityamandal tatha Sanskrit Sahitya Teno Falo is an account of the court of Vastupal, the medieval king of Gujarat, who was a connoisseur of art. Jyesthimall Jnati ane Malla Puran is a Jain manuscript published with comments and notes. Jagannathpuri ane Orissana Puratan Avashesho is a work on the old archaeological remains in Jagannath Puri and Orissa. Jain Agam Sahityama Gujarat is a research on references to Gujarat in Jain religious literature.[3][4]

Among his works on medieval Gujarati literature are Uttardyayan Sutra, an edition of medieval Jain manuscript with notes and comments, and Prachin Gujarati Sahityama Vritta Rachna (1941), a research work on the meters used in old and medieval Gujarati poetry. His Sattarma Satak na Prachin Gujarati Kavyo (1948) is a compilation of some previously unknown Gujarati poems of the seventeenth century.[3]

He traveled across The United States when The Rockefeller Foundation in New York invited him. On his way back from America, he visited Japan and Southeastern Asia. He serialized this tour in Buddhiprakash as Ek Vidyayatra which was published later as a book by name of Pradakshina (1962), which give insights into the history and cultures of the areas he visited.[5]

Recognition

He received Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1953 and Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in 1962.[1]
