Beyond Limits is an American artificial intelligence company known for transforming proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense into innovative technology solutions to address emerging industry markets.[1][2]

History

Beyond Limits was founded in 2014 by AJ Abdallat with its headquarters located in Glendale, California.[3] In 2012, the company was granted an exclusive license by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to update, augment and commercialize 40 of its artificial intelligence programs, which had been developed through NASA’s Deep Space program and operated out of Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).One of the programs licensed by Beyond Limits is the Spacecraft Health Inference Engine (SHINE).[4]

In August 2017, the company appointed Dr. Mark L. James as its Chief Technology Officer.[5] James had previously served as a principal investigator with the Reasoning, Modeling, and Simulation Group at JPL and helped create the intellectual property that Beyond Limits licensed from JPL.[6] Notable developments by Dr. James include automated tools and techniques for reducing operational and maintenance costs in the NASA Deep Space Network, [7] and the Spacecraft Health Automated Reasoning Prototype (SHARP) to automatically detect and analyze potential spacecraft and ground systems problems by performing real-time analysis of spacecraft and ground data systems engineering telemetry.[8]

In September 2017, the company hired Cardiologist and Venture Capital specialist Dr. Manikanda Arunachalam as Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and Investments to head its initiatives in the healthcare and health tech space.[9]

In October 2017, the company appointed Dr. Shahram Farhadi as its Head of Oil and Gas Technologies.[10]

Funding

Beyond Limits raised a total of $5.5million from undisclosed investors in its series A round of funding.[11] In addition, it was announced in June 2017 that the company had secured $20 million in Series B funding from BP Ventures, the corporate investment arm of global energy business, BP.[12][13]

Services

Beyond Limits uses AI technology licensed from NASA’s JPL program to create cognitive AI software solutions for industries including energy, healthcare,[14][15] and financial services.[16] Artificial Intelligence is expected to play an increasing role in IoT.[17]
