Bert Van Bork (1928 – October 29, 2014) was a German Born multi-award-winning producer, director, cinematographer, still photographer, painter, and printer. Born in Augustusburg. He studied fine arts in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, and later moved to Chicago where he began to work on creating instructional film for companies like [1] Encyclopedia Britannica Films as well as Physical Science Study Committee.

His work was heavily influenced by German expressionism[2] and some of his most critically acclaimed works include his short documentary film called Eyewitness (1999 film) and “The Seventeen Year Locust or later which was later renamed Insect Life Cycle: The Periodical Cicada[3]

Early career

Following World War II, he began creating woodcuts depicting a Berlin postwar. In 1954, he moved to Chicago and was already established as a masterful photographer after being awarded the National Award for Outstanding Photography in Germany, though once he moved to the city he began working with oil paints and canvas to portray the landscapes of the American Southwest as well as the cityscapes of Chicago.

While in Chicago Van Bork started filming and producing instructional videos. while also working to create a collective to preserve pieces of art that were created in concentration camps during World War II

Career with Encyclopedia Britannica

In 1957 Bert Van Bork met with Warren Everote who worked multiple positions during his time at Encyclopedia Britannia Films from a filmmaker to executive producer to even president. In this meeting, Van Bork showed him his film The Seventeen Year Locust which landed him a job to produce art and science films for Encyclopedia Britannica and the film was later renamed Insect Life Cycle: the Periodical Cicada for distribution purposes
