Bernardo Fernandez

Bernardo Fernandez was an early pioneer, sailor, and gold prospector of western Contra Costa County, California in the United States of America.[1]

History

He arrived in Pinole, California in 1853 from Portugal, and was considered a "giant" in local business through until his death in 1912. He was considered the "richest resident" of the area circa 1867.[2] He raised cattle and grain, built many warehouses and a mansion now known as the Bernardo Fernandez House historical site. He emigrated from Villa da Figueira, Portugal (now known as Figueira da Foz).[3] He was married to Carlotta Cuadra with whom he operated a freight business between Contra Costa County and San Francisco and a dairy farm that closed in the 1960s now preserved.[4]
