Beowulf Sheehan is an American photographer known for photographing authors, artists, and other figures such as Joe Biden, Valentino Deng, Zadie Smith, Salman Rushdie, and Steve Martin[1].
Early life
Born in 1968 in Kansas City, Missouri to a German mother and an American father, Beowulf Sheehan(born Theodore Beowulf Sheehan) was raised in South Florida and spent much of his childhood traveling outside of the United States. His early years were characterized by a fascination with art, writing, stories, and, in a broader sense, people. Sheehan cites this childhood fascination as the beginning of his career photographing artists, authors, and other notable figures. He started photographing during Miami Dolphins games and quickly realized his love of the craft.
Career
Beowulf Sheehan got his starting shooting for a modeling agency in Miami, Florida. Looking back, he described his perspective at the time as "naïve" and "unprepared for the culture of the business."[1] His photos were first featured in an exhibition during his study at the International Center of Photography, where he shot a photographic essay on tugboats. Since then, his work has been featured at the Dostoevsky Museum, the International Center of Photography, the Museum of the City of New York, and the New-York Historical Society, among other venues. His subjects include figures such as Stephen Colbert, St. Vincent, Josh Ritter, John Oliver, Hillary Clinton and countless others[2]. His book, Author: the Portraits of Beowulf Sheehan is set to be released on October 9th, 2018.
