History

Bennett Jones was founded in Calgary in 1922 with the dissolution of a 25-year partnership between R.B. Bennett and Sir James Alexander Lougheed (Lougheed, Bennett & Company) and the creation of the new partnership Bennett, Hannah & Sanford.[1]

  • 2010 – Bennett Jones opens a representative office in Beijing [11] and the first law office of Bennett Jones (Middle East) LLP in Dubai, making the firm the first Canadian law firm licensed to practice in the UAE[12]
  • 2011 – Bennett Jones opens an office in Abu Dhabi, its second office in the UAE[13]
  • 2012 – Bennett Jones opens an office Doha, Qatar, its third office in the Middle East[14]
  • 2013 - Bennett Jones closes Dubai and Abu Dhabi offices.
  • 2014 - Bennett Jones opens first office in the USA, in Washington, DC, exclusively practising "Canadian law with a focus on competition and antitrust, and issues confronting US and international businesses in Canada".[15]
  • 2014 - Bennett Jones opens offices in Vancouver[16] and Bermuda

Significant cases

Sino-Forest v Muddy Waters, Carson Brock et al.

In 2012, Bennett Jones represented Sino-Forest Corporation in its lawsuit against Muddy Waters Research in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Sino-Forest claimed $4 billion in damages. The Statement of Claim accused Muddy Waters of publishing a research report that was "defamatory" and included allegations "made with a reckless regard for the truth." [17] [18] However, on January 10, 2012, Sino-Forest announced that its historic financial statements and related audit reports should not be relied upon. [19]
