Benjamin D. Norton is an American journalist, writer, and musician.[1] Norton's literary work focuses primarily on United States foreign policy, the Middle East, and US politics.

Career

Ben Norton started his career as a freelance journalist. In 2015 he became a political staff writer at Salon, where he reported extensively on the 2016 US presidential campaign, the emails of former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and U.S. support in the 2015 war in Yemen.[2]

From late 2016 until early 2018, Norton was a reporter at AlterNet.[3] He wrote for The Grayzone Project, a journalistic initiative founded and edited by journalist Max Blumenthal, which was previously hosted by AlterNet, until AlterNet was purchased by the owner of Raw Story.[4] The Grayzone Project is now independent.[5]

Max Blumenthal and Ben Norton jointly host the political podcast Moderate Rebels.[6] On Moderate Rebels they have interviewed guests such as Joseph Massad,[7] Patrick Cockburn,[8] Shehla Rashid,[9] Ali Abunimah,[10] Rania Khalek,[11] and Gareth Porter.[12]

Since early 2018, Norton has been a producer and reporter at the Real News Network.[13][14]

Norton and Blumenthal have co-written several articles,[15] including one in April 2017 wherein they expressed skepticism about the chemical attack that month on Khan Shaykhun in Syria.[16] Previously, Norton had individually signed a statement calling for "an end to the regime change intervention by the United States, NATO and their regional allies and the killing of innocent people in Syria," and defending "the right of the Syrian government to request and accept military assistance from other countries, as even the U.S. government has admitted."[17]

At The Intercept, where he has contributed, Norton published a report with journalist Glenn Greenwald criticizing PropOrNot, a group of anonymous people with no publicly disclosed credentials who compiled a blacklist of news outlets which purportedly spread Russian propaganda.[18]

Norton is a regular contributor to the media watchdog organization Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR).[19]

Benjamin Norton has appeared as an analyst and commentator on numerous media outlets, including Al Jazeera English,[20][21] Al Jazeera Arabic,[22] Democracy Now,[23] The Real News,[24] Chris Hedges' program On Contact,[25][26] and Lee Camp's show Redacted Tonight.[27] His articles have also appeared in Mondoweiss,[28] Al-Araby Al-Jadeed,[29] Truthout,[30] Middle East Monitor,[31] and more. He blogs at his personal website, BenNorton.com.[32]

In September 2018 he tweeted that "the US government-backed Dalai Lama (a longtime CIA asset) is an extreme reactionary who is now doing racist dog-whistling to European fascists"[33]
