The Belle Fourche Formation or Belle Fourche Shale is a geologic unit classification in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming, formed in a stage of the Western Interior Seaway, and roughly corresponding in age with the Graneros Shale classification in states to the south and east.[1] It preserves fossils dating back to the Cretaceous period.
