Bedok South Secondary School (BDS) (Chinese: 尚义中学; pinyin: Shàngyì Zhōngxué) is a government, co-educational secondary school in Bedok, Singapore.[1]

The school is one of eight schools to be selected for the 'Teach Less, Learn More' programmes.

History

Bedok South Secondary School was established in 1980, initially sharing its premises with Temasek Secondary School and Hong San Primary School, and was declared open on 29 April 1982 by Dr Lee Chiaw Meng, MP for Tanah Merah. It was located along New Upper Changi Road, in the Bedok housing estate before being relocated to the current premises at 1 Jalan Langgar Bedok in 2003.

The new campus was officially opened on 21 February 2004 by Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament and MP for East Coast GRC (Siglap). A sports hall was constructed for the school in 2009.

Academic Information

Being an integrated secondary school, Bedok South Secondary School offers three academic streams, namely the four-year Express course, as well as the Normal Course, comprising Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) academic tracks.

O Level Express Course

The Express Course is a nationwide four-year programme that leads up to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination.[2]

Normal Course

The Normal Course is a nationwide 4-year programme leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination, which runs either the Normal (Academic) curriculum or Normal (Technical) curriculum, abbreviated as N(A) and N(T) respectively.[3]

Normal (Academic) Course

In the Normal (Academic) course, students offer 5-8 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination.Compulsory subjects include:[4]

  • English Language
  • Mother Tongue Language
  • Mathematics
  • Combined Humanities

A 5th year leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination is available to N(A) students who perform well in their Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination. Students can move from one course to another based on their performance and the assessment of the school principal and teachers.[3]

Normal (Technical) Course

The Normal (Technical) course prepares students for a technical-vocational education at the Institute of Technical Education.[4] Students will offer 5-7 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination.[4] The curriculum is tailored towards strengthening students’ proficiency in English and Mathematics.[4] Students take English Language, Mathematics, Basic Mother Tongue and Computer Applications as compulsory subjects.[4]
