Beach Fossils are an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2009. The group currently includes Dustin Payseur, Jack Doyle Smith and Tommy Davidson.[1] They are known for their lo-fi, atmospheric sound and Payseur's vocal style.[3][4]

History

Formed in 2009, the act was originally a means to expand the solo project of Dustin Payseur. That same year, bassist John Peña and guitarist Christopher Burke were recruited, followed by Zachary Cole Smith on drums. Their debut single, Daydream/Desert Sand was released in February 2010 on Captured Tracks. In May 2010, their self-titled debut album was released, and met with favorable reviews.[3][5][6]

The following years saw a number of changes to their lineup. In 2010 Christopher Burke left the band, followed by John Peña in 2011, who was replaced by Jack Doyle Smith. Peña formed Heavenly Beat, and Cole Smith left for his solo project, DIIV.[7][8] Tommy Gardner stepped in as the drummer and Tommy Davidson joined on guitar to complete their lineup.[9] Clash the Truth was released in early 2013, peaking at number 40 on the Independent Albums chart.[10]

In 2016, Beach Fossils starred in supporting roles in the HBO television series, Vinyl. None of the band members had ever acted before.[11]

On March 2, 2017, the band announced that their upcoming third LP would be titled "Somersault" and would be released on June 2, 2017. This is the first album by the Beach Fossils released under Bayonet Records, which is owned by lead singer Payseur and his wife Kate Garcia.[12] The first single from the album, titled "This Year", was debuted alongside the album announcement. Rachel Goswell from Slowdive and Cities Aviv were also announced to have guest appearances on the new album.[13]

On March 13, 2017, the band revealed the departure of drummer Tommy Gardner, who moved to China for a new career path. Gardner had been a part of Beach Fossils since 2011.[14]

In 2018, Beach Fossils announced they would be going on tour with Wavves across North America.[15][16]
