BeFrugal was founded in 2009 by current CEO Jon Lal. The site began by featuring online coupons, printable coupons for restaurants and grocery stores, and promotion codes.[3]

In 2011, BeFrugal added Cash Back to its site, allowing users to earn money back on purchases made at partner retailers after clicking through BeFrugal.com.[4] In 2014, members spent over $250 million shopping through BeFrugal.com.[5]

BeFrugal is also known for its Fly or Drive Calculator that determines if it is cheaper to travel by plane or automobile. Its calculation is based on your vehicle and route, factoring in tolls, hotel, and potential cab cost to and from the airport.[6]
