After capturing Kyoto in the Battle of Shinowara, Minamoto no Yoshinaka pursued Go-Shirakawa and his cousin Minamoto Yoritomo. Yoshinaka burned Shirakawa's palace and brutally attacked his troops in addition to gaining control over Shirakawa's Imperial Prison.[1]
