Ban Bat

Ban Bat (also spelled Banbatt; Thai: บ้านบาตร, pronounced [bâːn bàːt]) is one of the five sub-districts (khwaeng) in Bangkok's Pom Prap Sattru Phai district. It has a total area of 0.316 km2 (round about 0.122 mi2). Some parts of the north area along the Khlong Maha Nak.[1][2] The west side next to Phra Nakhon district's Samran Rat sub-district.

Its name "Ban Bat" refers to "Community of Monk's Alms Bowl" (Ban means "house", "village", "community"; Bat or Batt means alms bowl for monks used to receive donations of foods from Buddhists or devotees in the early morning). Since locals, it's believed that there're ancestors who migrated from Ayutthaya after its fall in 1767. Later King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I) was established Rattanakosin kingdom (today's Bangkok) in 1782. They came to settle here, but some believe that they came to settle in the reign of King Nangklao (Rama III). Regardless of whether or not, they have a career in making monk's alms bowl, it's a kind of craft that requires a lot of hard work. Until today, this's the only one that still preserves. At present, the locals have gathered to set up a group to conserve the monk's alms bowl hand-making called Ban Bat Community and sold to the visitors as a souvenir.[2]

Once upon a time, Ban Bat was also home to Luang Pradit Pairoh's house and his band, he was regarded as one of the master of traditional Thai music.

In addition, in this area there's another old community, Ban Dokmai nearby. It's a community that has been involved in making fireworks since the past (firework in Thai called dokmai fai–ดอกไม้ไฟ; literally "flame flower"). Alike to a community of Ban Bat, this profession is going to be lost.[2]
