Balwinder Singh Bhunder is an Indian politician, currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, from the state of Punjab. He is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal party.[1] He is a former MLA from Sardulgarh, Mansa district. He served as the cabinet minister for agriculture from 1977–1980.

Biography

He was born 20 September 1944, in the village of Bhunder, Sardulgarh, Mansa district, in the state of Punjab, to Sardar Boota Singh and Shrimati Surjit Kaur. He is married to Shrimati Balwant Kaur.[1] They had two sons, Balraj Singh and Dilraj Singh. Balraj Singh died in 2007 at the age of 40.

Political career

From 1964 to 1972 he was a village Sarpanch. From 1972 to 1987 and 2002 to 2007, he was a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly; during that time, he served as Cabinet Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Soil Conservation in the Government of Punjab from 1977–1980.

During the period of 1997 to 1999, he served on the Agriculture Marketing Board of Punjab, was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and served as a member of various committees related to food and agriculture.

In July 2010, he was again elected to the Rajya Sabha, and served on various committees.
