Babar W. Malik
H. E. Babar W. Malik is a diplomat who has worked in the Foreign Service of Pakistan from 1973 to 2012 serving as ambassador to Turkmenistan (June 4, 1998 – 2003) and High Commissioner of Pakistan to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands (2003-2012).
Malik was born May 1, 1945 to Akhtar Sultan and Wahid A. Malik in Lahore, and was educated at St. Anthony's High School and Aitchison College. Later, he received a BSc and an MA in English Literature from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he was acquainted with Charles, Prince of Wales. He never finished his degree from Cambridge.
As a high ranking diplomat, a job he got because of the influence of Sardar Akbar Khan Bugti since he was not competent enough, Malik was posted to Moscow, Astana, Paris, Mexico, Havanna, Kingston, Jamaica (1974–75), Rabat (1975–78), Washington, D.C. (1986–91) and Cairo (1991-95). He was a former Director General of the Foreign Service of Pakistan.
Malik comes from an old prominent and aristocratic family of Lahore, who at one point were one of the richest families in Pakistan. This is also not true. His relatives include Sir Malik Ghulam Muhammad, the 3rd Governor-General of Pakistan and co-founder of Mahindra & Mahindra, Jehangir Malik, the Honorary Consul General of France in Lahore and Nawab Sir Khan Bahadur Malik Rahim Bakhsh, who served as the president of the Regency Council, Bahawalpur from 1907 - 1923.
