Arjun Kanungo is an Indian singer, composer, actor, and entrepreneur. By 18, Arjun had set up a professional recording studio - Promethean audio.[1] In the next few years, Arjun caught the attention of industry legend, Asha Bhosle, who he then toured with all over the world as her opening act and male lead.[2]

A classically trained singer, Arjun's first commercial success came with "Khoon Choos Le" in the 2013 film- Go Goa Gone, starring Saif Ali Khan, which rocked the charts.[3][4] Since then he has churned out 3 hit singles in 2 years- Baaki Baatein Peene Baad ft. Badshah, Fursat, and Ek Dafaa (Chinnama). Arjun has lent his voice to several Bollywood films. His Tamil Debut came with 'Sirrikadhey', composed by Anirudh Ravichander, from the film 'Remo'.[5]

Arjun Kanungo's single "Gallan Tipsiyaan" which literally translates to "interesting conversations when drunk", a party number has garnered massive appreciation online.[6]

His song 'La la la' with Neha Kakkar, which released on February 7, 2018, has more than 75 million views on YouTube.[7]

His latest song 'Aaya Na Tu' with Momina Mustehsan, was released on June 19, 2018, and has gathered more than 7 million views on YouTube in 2 days.[8]

Arjun won the GIMA Award for best debut in 2015. He was featured in Times of India's 100 most desirable men on 2016 at no. 31 beating huge names like Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor.[9]

His fans proudly call themselves "Fanungos".[10]

Early life

Kanungo was born and raised in Mumbai.[11] He is a trained method actor from Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City.[12] He is an 3-time national Gold Medal winner in Centre Fire Pistol and a national level Basketball player.

He is a trained Indian classical singer[13][13] and plays the piano & guitar. He is a promoter of green energy and alternate sources of energy. His own house in Bandra, has a solar energy system in place. He went ahead with this initiative out of his concern for Earth and according to him, now the solar technology is now economical and feasible.[14]

Not only this, the artist prefers to walk, carpools to work, has given up red meat and milk and doesn’t dispose off his waste carelessly. The eating supplies at his home are from his farm at Mumbai’s outskirts, where he has also planted more than 800 trees.

Arjun wishes to create awareness about the natural hazards to Earth and how we can contribute towards sustainable development by making simple changes in our lifestyle.[14]

Career

At the age of 18, Arjun explored his entrepreneurial side by opening up a recording studio in Mumbai called Promethean Audio. Soon after, he diversified into acoustic design and construction with his second venture Promethean Design. He gained popularity after his stint as a playback singer for movies like Go Goa Gone and Pizza. As a vocalist, Arjun has toured India, Dubai, Australia and Sri Lanka with Asha Bhosle,[3][12][11] in addition to solo shows.He is also active as a composer for TV ads and background scores also has worked with brands like Nike Cricket and ESPN. On 25 September 2015 Arjun Kanungo's debut single Baaki Baatein Peene Baad was released on Sony Music India.[15] The song features the rapper Badshah.

In an interview with The Tribune which appeared on 28 September 2015. Arjun also disclosed the name of his next release, Fursat.[16] Posted on 7 April 2016.

Times of India released the list of Most Desirable Indian Male Celebrities in 2016 and Arjun Kanungo made it to the Top 50. The list was curated according to the performances and the awards all celebrities won during the working year of 2016. Arjun ranked 31st in the list, beating faces like Saif Ali Khan, Abhay Deol, and Arjun Kapoor.[17]

Arjun Kanungo made his UK debut with a live stage performance at the Asian Network 2017, in March. The event saw a throng of fans who were seen grooving to Arjun’s songs.[18]

Baaki Baatein Peene Baad

Arjun Kanungo's debut single Baaki Baatein Peene Baad was released on 25 September by Sony Music India. The song was written by Mayur Puri and was composed, written, recorded and produced in Sweden.[19] Mayur Puri and Arjun Kanungo spent one week in Stockholm writing and producing four songs in mid 2015. Later, after returning to India, Bollywood rapper Badshah heard the song and immediately replied to Arjun with a rap verse.

Baaki Baatein Peene Baad went viral on YouTube upon its release and subsequently climbed the TV & radio charts. The song is currently at #3 on the Shazam India Charts and the top-rated Hindi language song.[20]

Fursat

Curiosity for Arjun Kanungo's second single, Fursat, began early with fans noticing a neon 'Fursat' sign in the Baaki Baatein Peene Baad video.[21] Fursat was eventually released on 18 March by Sony Music India. Like his debut single, Fursat was also written by Mayur Puri and was composed, written, recorded and produced in Sweden.[19]

Ek Dafaa

Arjun Kanungo recently released a new song 'Ek Dafaa'. It also features the chartbuster song ‘Chinnamma Chilakkamma’ which was originally composed by none other than A.R. Rahman.[22]

Gallan Tipsiyaan

Arjun Kanungo has just released his latest single 'Gallan Tipsiyaan' which is a fast growing club hit. The title of the track loosely translates to "interesting conversations when drunk".[23] The music video was shot in New York and the lyrics were written by Vayu of "Beat Pe Booty" and "Bandook Meri Laila" fame.[24][25]

Influences

Arjun grew up listening to everything from old school metal to Indian Classical. He names Iron Maiden, Metallica, Justin Timberlake, Ustad Rashid Khan, Kumar Gandharv, Andy McKee, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach[12] as well as Kishori Amonkar, Amit Trivedi, Clinton Cerejo and AR Rahman as his music influences.[26]
