BAA Training (the former Baltic Aviation Academy and a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group) is one of the largest European standard aviation training centres[1], headquartered in Vilnius, Lithuania. It is one of the leading aviation training centres and Approved Training Organizations (ATO) in the European Union[2]. The company provides training for more than 19 types of aircraft at over 30 locations all over the world[3]. Its ground training facilities have spacious and modern classrooms, air speak classroom and a FNPT II trainer. At the moment BAA Training Ab Initio school has over 200 students from more 50 different countries. Their training is being conducted in 3 different Lithuanian aerodromes with the school fleet consisting of 18 Tecnam and Cessna aircraft[4].

BAA Training Historical Timeline

  • 2006 – Foundation of the academy
    • The establishment of flyLAL Training Centre fully owned by flyLAL Group. The centre provided training for B737CL and SAAB 2000 pilots and cabin crew.[5]
  • 2008 – First simulation training equipment
    • Acquisition of the first full flight simulator – Boeing 737 – deployed at the HQ of the academy.
    • Installation of the Real Fire Fighting Trainer for Firefighting and Smoke training at the HQ of the academy
  • 2009 – Name Change
    • Due to the implementation of a new business strategy, the academy changes its name into Baltic Aviation Academy.
  • 2011 – Further expansion
    • Acquisition of the Airbus A320 full flight simulator installed at the premises of the academy in Vilnius.
    • Acquisition of the first Cessna 150 marks the inception of the Ab Initio Flight School.  
    • Establishment of a new business line – SimHelp – complements the list of training services by dedicated simulator maintenance assistance and provision of spare parts.
  • 2013 – ATO under EASA requirements and expansion
    • Aviation training centre Baltic Aviation Academy receives approved training organisation certificate under EASA.
    • FNPT trainer order for Ab Initio Flight School training.
    • Foundation of MOMook – intelligent business management software, designed specifically for aviation training centres.[6]
  • 2015 – Rebranding for the international expansion
    • Baltic Aviation Academy becomes BAA Training[7]. The name change marks the stage of the company’s expansion and the overriding need for an internationally recognizable brand.  
  • 2016 – New opportunities for clients
    • Purchase of the Airbus A320 touch screen trainer allows to get better prepared for flight training on the full flight simulator and save time and costs for clients[8].  
    • Initiation of the first Cadet Programme[9].
    • BAA Training establishes Emblick competency centre, an internal Avia Solutions Group competency centre[10], which is open for other Lithuanian organisations.
  • 2017 – First helicopter cadet programme
    • Kick-off of the first Helicopter Cadet Programme.
  • 2018 – Acquisition of Door and Slide Trainer and expansion

Since 2016, BAA Training started actively working with Wizz Air, SmartLynx, Small Planet Airlines, Avion Express, Lao Skyway airlines and BayViet aviation school on Cadet training solutions[14][15][16].

In addition to the training base in Vilnius, Lithuania, BAA Training provides Type rating training solutions for 15+ types of aircraft in 85+ full flight simulators extended across 30+ locations in Europe, North and South Americas, Africa and Asia.[19]

In 2017, to respond to the growing needs of type rating training caused by an increasing number of Ab Initio school students, BAA Training announced the acquisition of three new full flight simulators. By the end of 2018, BAA Training will be operating 5 full-flight simulators in Vilnius: three Airbus A320, one Boeing 737 CL, and one Boeing 737 NG.[20]

One of the FFS, A320, is estimated to arrive in the 3rd quarter of this year, while a new Boeing 737 NG type full flight simulator is expected to be assembled by the end of 2018. A second A320 FFS is expected to arrive as soon as the beginning of the next year.

Expansion to Asia and Spain

In 2018, BAA Training has announced the establishment of a new company in Vietnam – BAA Training Vietnam which is to operate a training centre of 4 full flight simulators and Ab Initio flight school by 2023.[21]

In 2018, the company also opens a new flight base in Lleida-Alguaire International Airport in Spain to ensure all-year-round training for its students. [22]

Supplementary business lines

In addition to the main business lines essential for training, BAA Training owns supplementary business lines to support its professional activity.

In 2011, BAA Training established SimHelp, a one-stop-shop for simulators’ operators, which provides integrated technical maintenance, simulator upgrades, parts repair, spare parts supply, renewals, relocation, sales and consultancy services for aviation training centres from all around the world. [23]

In October of 2013 intelligent business management software MOMook was launched. The IT solution focuses on everyday aviation training centre management and operations problems, and throughout the close collaboration with the seasoned aviation training professionals is able to provide the optimal solutions to the real-life problems. [24]

In 2016 BAA Training established Emblick competency centre, an internal Avia Solutions Group competency centre, which is also open for other Lithuanian organisations.[25]

Course completion certificates issued by BAA Training are valid in all EASA countries as well as in: Belarus, Jordan, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, Nepal, Republic of Korea, Russia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Tajikistan and Ukraine.
