Aymée Regla Nuviola Suárez (Havana, Cuba, January 8, 1973) better known by her stage name Aymeé Nuviola is a Cuban-American singer and actress. She is best known for portraying Celia Cruz in the 2015 telenovela Celia.

In 2014 and 2015, she was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album and Best Tropical Album with her release First Class to Havana.

History

Aymee was born in the barrio of San Leopoldo in Havana, Cuba. Her mother, Adelaida Elisa Suárez Hernández was history professor and head of tourism at the school of Hotel Sevilla in Havana and gave piano lessons in her home and composed children's music. Her father, Nelson Vicente Nuviola Bofill was an industrial engineer and music fan. Aymee shared her childhood with three siblings, Lourdes, Alexander and Nelson and her cousins, Renón, José Ángel and Mercita.

Raised in a family of musicians, Aymee began to play piano at the age of 3 and later graduated from Conservatorio de Manuel Samuell de la Habana.[1] She began to sing professionally at the age of 9 with her sister Lourdes as "the Nuviola Sisters". They eventually won the "Todo el mundo canta" (The Whole World Sings) contest.[2]

Aymee's music tends to be a fusion of several different genres, including jazz, timba, guaguanco, guaracha, charanga and other Caribbean styles but her international success came with her venture into salsa and timba ferroz.[3]

In 2015, Nuviola starred in the role of her major influences, Celia Cruz in the telenovela of the same name. She has recorded covers of several of Cruz's songs in her album Regreso a La Habana.
