Republic Records

In 1995, Avery and his brother, Monte, founded Republic Records.[4] They worked on the label in their spare time, working full-time in other positions.[5] Their first client was the Bloodhound Gang, which they signed to a record deal. Their next client was Chumbawamba, which the brothers signed to their own imprint, a co-venture with Universal Records Group. The group's debut album sold more than ten million copies.[6] This began their long-term relationship with Universal Music, being a part of Universal in one form or another from that point forward.[7] Major acts signed by the label in its early years also included 3 Doors Down, and Godsmack.[8]

In 1998, he left Sony to become General Manager of Republic. In January 2000, when the label became an imprint of Universal Records, he was named Republic’s Senior Vice President.[9]

In 2013, Lipman and his brother renewed their contracts with Universal Music Group. The announcement was made UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge.[10]
