Atypon Systems provides software-as-a-service content delivery to publishers. The company sells Literatum, a hosted platform solution to manage, deliver and monetize online content, and RightSuite, an enterprise access and commerce platform to provide authentication, authorization, administration, registration and licensing functionality for digital content. Atypon works with clients such as McGraw-Hill Education, American Chemical Society, The New England Journal of Medicine, Oxford University Press and CBS Interactive to distribute their content over the internet.[1]

History

Atypon was founded in 1996 by CEO Georgios Papadopoulos who was involved in pioneering developments at several high-tech companies in Silicon Valley. Papadopoulos’ early works included developing an access control system for Rizzoli Publishing and data fabrication software for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, an early digital scholarly journal.

Atypon has grown both organically and through acquisitions. It acquired Extenza e-Publishing Services[2][3] in 2005. The acquisition of eMeta in 2008[4] expanded Atypon’s product portfolio to include RightSuite, an enterprise access and commerce platform for the publishing and media industry. Atypon acquired the Metapress business from EBSCO Online in 2014, with the Metapress platform to be discontinued and customers moved to Atypon's Literatum platform.[5]

In October 2016, Atypon was purchased by John Wiley & Sons.[6]

Literatum is a hosted e-publishing platform that is used to manage, deliver and monetize online content.[7]

RightSuite is an enterprise access and commerce platform that provides authentication, authorization, administration, registration and licensing functionality for digital goods and services. It is available as server applications and as software-as-a-service.[8]
