The Atlantica Party is a political party in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Origins

The Atlantica Party was registered as a political party by Elections Nova Scotia on June 28, 2016.[1]

2017 election results

The party nominated 15 candidates in the 2017 provincial election, its first contested election.[2] The party won a total of 1,632 votes, 0.41% of the provincial total.[3]

2017 election platform

  • MLA recall.
  • Elimination of government interference (i.e. subsidies, loans) in the private sector.
  • Privatization of retail and wholesale liquor market via elimination of Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation.
  • Lower personal income tax and elimination of corporate and small business income tax.
  • MLA pension and salary reform.
  • Electoral Reform.[4]

Leadership change

Jonathan Dean resigned as leader on January 7, 2018.[5] He consistently polled between 0-1% for leader preference.

Approximately two weeks after his resignation became effective, Dean used the Party's database to reach out to supporters regarding a possible run for leadership of the Progressive Conservatives. He did not enter the race.

Ryan Smyth was officially named as interim leader of the Party on January 16, 2018; however, he officially took over as interim leader on January 7, 2018, the effective date of Dean's departure.[6]

Suspension and reinstatement by Elections Nova Scotia

On June 19, 2018, the Party announced that it had been informed by Elections Nova Scotia that it would be suspended the following day due to a loan with its former leader, Jonathan Dean. The release stated that the Party "believes that we have strong legal and ethical arguments to successfully overturn this suspension and we look forward to sharing more information with our supporters and all Nova Scotians as soon as the parameters for a fair and transparent hearing are established."[7] On July 17, 2018, the Party announced that the result of a July 13, 2018 meeting with Elections Nova Scotia was "a clear pathway to reinstatement on or before July 23, 2018."[8]

On July 24, 2018, Elections Nova Scotia announced that the suspension had been extended to August 15, 2018.[9]

The Party was fully reinstated on August 16, 2018.[10]

Possible fraudulent activity by former leader

On June 21, 2018, the Party announced that "some anomalies" involving Dean's involvement in the loan agreement were discovered by the Party. It was further noted that possible illegal activity would be investigated by Elections Nova Scotia and "probably the RCMP." It was also revealed that the Party's executive "don't really know [Dean]" including his work history.[11]

Former leader admits to breaking the law

Dean subsequently publicly admitted to breaking Nova Scotia election law, further damaging his controversy-plagued public standing.[12]
