The Association of Writers of Serbia (UKS) (Serbian: Удружење књижевника Србије, Udruženje književnika Srbije) is Serbia's official writing association.

History

The association was founded on May 26, 1905 under the presidency of Milan Đ. Milićević.[1]

The first management consisted of:

  • Simo Matavulj, acting as president
  • Jovan Skerlić, secretary
  • Dobrosav Ružić, treasurer
  • Živojin O. Dačić, librarian
  • Rista J. Odavić, host

Post-WWII

As a result of the Slovene Writers' Association's support of the 1989 Kosovo miners' strike the UKS broke off its relations with the Slovene Writers' Association.[2]

Mission

The UKS states its main goals as:

  • gathering Serbian authors in the same community
  • to protect the professional interests of its members
  • to work on their interpersonal relationships
  • to work on relations with publishers and the general public
  • to make their job(s) easier
  • to help its members or their families who are in poverty.
