Ashok Jhunjhunwala is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras at Chennai, India and has served as the departmental chair.[1]

He leads the Telecommunications and Computer Networks group (TeNeT) at IIT Madras. This group is closely working with industry in the development of a number of Telecommunications and Computer Network Systems. TeNeT group has incubated a number of technology companies (like DesiCrew Solutions) which work in partnership with TeNeT group to develop Telecom Access products. The group has also incubated a company which aims to install and operate telephone and internet in every village in India.

He is a director on the board of State Bank of India. He is also a board member of several Telecom and IT companies in India, including Sasken, Tejas Networks and HTL, NRDC, and IDRBT. He is a former board member of VSNL & BSNL.

Controversies

In 2017, Jhunjhunwala was embroiled in an alleged conflict of interest controversy which he denied. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) floated a tender to procure 4,000 electric vehicle chargers. The tender required certification from IIT Chennai committee of which Jhunjhunwala was a member. The only company to have this certification was Exicom Tele-systems, of which Jhunjhunwala was once a director.[2]

Early life

Ashok Jhunjhunwala was born in Kolkata on 22 June 1953 in a Marwari family. His grandfather was a Gandhian and a close associate of Vinoba Bhave and worked with Mahatma Gandhi.[3]

He studied in St Lawrence High School in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India, completing the Higher Secondary examination in 1970. He received his B.Tech degree from IIT Kanpur, and his MS and Ph.D degrees from the University of Maine. From 1979 to 1981, he was with Washington State University as Assistant Professor. Since 1981, he has been teaching at IIT Madras.[4]

Contributions in technology innovation

Ashok Jhunjhunwala had contributed in the field of technology and had been on various boards. He advises several technology companies and government agencies in India [5][6][7]

Awards and honors

Jhunjhunwala was named JC Bose Fellowship in 2010[8]

He was Governor of the International Council for Computer Communication Inc., (ICCC) from 1999–2005.[9]
