Ashley Bouder (/ˈbdər/; born December 10, 1983) is an American ballet dancer who is currently a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet.

Early life

Ashley Bouder was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She began ballet training when she was six at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet with Marcia Dale Weary. In 1999, after attending the summer program at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, Ashley Bouder was invited by SAB to continue her training during the Winter Session.[1]

Career

Ms. Bouder was named an apprentice with New York City Ballet in June 2000. She became a member of the corps de ballet in October 2000. She was promoted to the rank of Soloist in February 2004 and became a principal dancer in January 2005. Ms. Bouder dances as a guest artist with ballet companies and festivals around the world. She also has a degree in Political Science.

The Ashley Bouder Project

Ms. Bouder helms her own small company, The Ashley Bouder Project, that has mounted several innovative ballet productions in New York over the years, primarily centered on commissioning new works by women choreographers and composers, including her own. Notable recent appearances have been at the Joyce Theater in 2015.[2] And at The Symphony Space in 2017, in collaboration with The New York Jazzharmonic.[3][4] This was the first time that an entire evening of ballet in varied styles was set solely to the accompaniment of a jazz orchestra.

Style

Ashley Bouder is a fearsome technician, who is known for her athleticism. Due to her enthusiastic dance and her happiness, Bouder is one of NYCB's most popular dancers.

Awards

She was a recipient of the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise in 2000 and of The Janice Levin Dancer Award in 2003.[5]

Personal life

She is married to financier Peter de Florio, and gave birth to their daughter, Violet Storm de Florio, on May 4, 2016.[6]
