History

Artillería funicular railway on 2007, to the left was the original line.

This was the third funicular railway built in the city of Valparaíso. It was inaugurated on the 29 of December 1892, but began to run just on the 22 of January 1893, because it was stopped due a lack of water to run the machinery.

It was so successful, that its designer, Ernesto Onfray, built another line right by the first one in 1908, making it the only funicular railway in the city with four tracks and two independent machine rooms.

In 1968 the first line of the funicular stopped its services, due a poor demand of public.

Today the funicular railway used is the second one, and it is a big urban landmark of the city.
