Arthur L. "Art" Haywood is a Pennsylvania politician. A Democrat, he is currently the Pennsylvania State Senator for the 4th district. Prior to being elected to the State Senate in the 2014 election, Haywood practiced law and served as a commissioner in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania.[1][2]

Biography

Haywood is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and attended Morehouse College. He earned a law degree at the University of Michigan Law School and studied at the London School of Economics as a Marshall Scholar. He began practicing law and moved to the Philadelphia area in 1985. In 2009, he and Kathy Hampton challenged and defeated two incumbent township commissioners during the Democratic primary and ultimately were elected as Cheltenham Township commissioners. Haywood later served as President of the Board of Commissioners. Haywood was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in the 2014 election, defeating incumbent Senator LeAnna Washington and Brian Gralnick. He and his wife, Julie Haywood (nee Billingslea), married in 1989 and have three adult children.[2] In 2008, the Haywoods were prominent and active volunteers in the campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. In 2016 Haywood became the first elected official in Pennsylvania to endorse presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries[3].

Political views

Public education

According to the state Senator's campaign website, "low levels of state funding puts a greater burden on local taxes."[4]

Minimum wage

Haywood argued that "everyone who's able to work, should work, and receive a decent wage for that work. Without proper wages, parents are less able to provide for their children. Raising wages not only benefits families, businesses also benefit from greater consumer spending."[4]

Gun laws

Also during the 2014 campaign, based upon the number of gun-related deaths in Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2010, he proposed "restricting access to guns."[4]
