The Arnhem sheath-tailed bat,[2] (Taphozous kapalgensis) is a species of sheath-tailed bat in the family Emballonuridae.[3] It is found only in Australia.

Taxonomy and etymology

It was described as a new species in 1979 by McKean and Friend. The holotype was collected near South Alligator River in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its species name "kapalgensis" means "belonging to Kapalga;" Kapalga is the type locality for the species.[4]

Description

It has a forearm length of 58.5–61 mm (2.30–2.40 in). Its wingspan is 420 mm (17 in), its tail length is 21.8–22.5 mm (0.86–0.89 in); its ear length is 18.3–21.6 mm (0.72–0.85 in). The holotype weighed 26 g (0.92 oz).[4]

Range and habitat

It is only known from the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory, though there is evidence that its range may be larger.[1]

Conservation

As of 2017, it is evaluated as a least-concern species by the IUCN. It meets the criteria for this classification because its population trend is likely stable and no major threats to its existence have been identified. Part of its range consists of protected areas.[1]
