Arjun Malhotra (born 7 January 1949) is an Indian entrepreneur, industrialist and philanthropist. A pioneer of the information technology industry in India, Malhotra co-founded and served as vice chairman of the HCL Group, one of India’s largest Info Tech corporations. He also founded TechSpan and served as CEO of US-based firm Headstrong after the two companies merged. Malhotra was described by Business Today as a “serial technology entrepreneur” who “was ahead of the learning curve” with each of his companies.[2][3] Along with Bill Gates and HCL co-founder Shiv Nadar, Malhotra serves as a mentor with the Antara Foundation, an Indian non-governmental organization that dedicated to creating a better public health system backed by policy and funding.[4] He also serves as an advisor at MYRA School of Business. Malhotra is currently the Chairman of the investment firm SolMark and software solutions firm Magic Software Inc.[5]

Education

Malhotra was born in 1949 in Calcutta, India. He attended The Doon School in Dehradun and also graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with bachelor's degrees in technology in electronics & electrical communication engineering where he was awarded the Dr. B C Roy Gold Medal. He later attended Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 1985.[1]

Career

Malhotra began his career as a senior management trainee at Delhi Cloth & General Mills Co. Ltd. In 1975, he partnered with Shiv Nadar, Ajai Chowdhry, D.S. Puri, Yogesh Vaidya and Subhash Arora to found a company known as Microcomp Limited, which sold digital calculators. Microcomp created a joint sector company named Hindustan Computers Limited and began manufacturing mini and microcomputers. Malhotra took over the role of Vice-Chairman.[6]

Malhotra, along with Sandeep Sahai, Nagesh Mehra, Puneet Pushkarna, Aloke Paskar, Curt Terwilliger (all colleagues from my HCL days), Harsh Lohit and Bonnie Singh started his IT venture TechSpan in 1998 and merged the company with IT services company Headstrong in 2003, becoming that company’s CEO.[7][8][9]

Philanthropy

In 1996, Malhotra founded India’s first school of telecommunication, the GS Sanyal School at IIT Kharagpur. He also donated to the establishment of the M N Faruqui Innovation Centre for students in 2012. Malhotra is a fellow of the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers, a member of the Institute of Engineers, India and also became a charter member of The Indus Entrepreneurs. He previously served as the chairman of TiE’s Global Board of Trustees, the co-chairman of the Global PAN IIT Alumni Organization, and a member of both the Board of Governors of the Delhi College of Arts & Commerce. He was also a member of the Board at the Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management at Gwalior. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of The Doon School of the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management at Shillong until September 2018.[10][11][12]

Awards and honors

Malhotra was awarded the Albert Einstein Technology Medal in 2001.[13] In 2003, he was named a Life Fellow by IIT Kharagpur, and later awarded the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the university in 2012.[14] In 2013, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Punjab Technical University.[15]
