Area code 308 is the telephone numbering plan code for western Nebraska in the North American Numbering Plan. It was created on July 1, 1954, as a split from area code 402. The roughly S-shaped 308/402 line generally runs south to northwest, first along the Platte River easterly and then northwesterly along the eastern edge of the Sandhills.
The cities of Grand Island and Hastings are less than 30 miles (48 km) apart, but have different area codes. Hastings is just a few miles east of the S-curved line defining the 308/402 divide.
This number plan area is one of the most sparsely populated in the nation. The bulk of Nebraska's population, as well as most of the state's landlines and cell phones, are located in the east. Under current projections, 308 will remain in its current configuration until at least 2046, and is in no danger of exhaustion.[1]
