Ardino municipality within Kardzhali Province

Ardino Municipality is a municipality in Kardzhali Province, Bulgaria. It includes the town of Ardino and a 51 rural villages. The municipality has 12.424 inhabitants (2016), of which 3799 lives in the town of Ardino and the remainder in one of the villages. [1]

The municipality of Ardino has lost more than two thirds of its population in a period of seventy years.

In 2016 there were 85 live births in the municipality of Ardino, down from 132 in 2000. Ardino has a low birth rate of 6,8‰. There were 3 births to teenage mothers (mothers between the ages of 15-19), down from 25 in 2000. [2]The total fertility rate is around 1,534 children per woman. At the same time there were 177 deaths[3], up from 168 deaths in 2000. Ardino has a high death rate of 14,2‰. The natural growth is minus 92 people (-7,4‰).

A majority of the population consists of ethnic Turks (71,2%).[4] Ethnic Bulgarians make up around 26,9% of the population. Nearly all of those Bulgarians are Pomaks.

Out of 7703 people (who responded to the question about their religion in the 2011 Census) about 91%, or 7039 people, declared to be part of the Muslim minority in Bulgaria.[5] Only 2% is member of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. This percentage shows that Islam is the main religion among both ethnic Turks and ethnic Bulgarians.
