Appian Corporation is a cloud computing company currently headquartered in Reston, Virginia, part of the Dulles Technology Corridor[2].

Appian sells a Platform as a Service for building enterprise software applications. It competes in the Low-Code Development [3], Business Process Management [4], and Case Management[5] markets.

Appian was named the 2018 Washington D.C. area "Top Workplace" by The Washington Post[6].

History

Appian was founded in 1999 by Matthew Calkins with co-founders Michael Beckley, Marc Wilson, and Robert Kramer.

In 2001, Appian developed Army Knowledge Online[7]. At the time, it was regarded as “the world's largest intranet"[8].

In 2004, Appian released Appian Enterprise, its first Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) software platform[9].

In 2014, Appian received $37.5 million in secondary investments from New Enterprise Associates[10].

By 2016, Appian’s software platform had evolved to include broader aspects of application development with a focus on low-code development[11].

On May 25, 2017, Appian became a publicly-traded company, trading under the symbol APPN on the NASDAQ Global Exchange[12][13]

In 2018, Appian announced it will move its headquarters to Tysons Corner, Virginia[14][15]
