Annie (actress)

Chitra Shaji Kailas (born Annie Jobbie), better known mononymously as Annie, is an Indian film actress and television presenter from Kerala, who appears in Malayalam film and television industry. Her film career spanned three years from 1993 to 1996 with a total of 16 films in Malayalam cinema, she retired from acting post-marriage and returned as a television presenter in 2015.

She debuted as an actress in 1993 in the film Ammayane Sathyam. In 1995, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam for her role in Mazhayethum Munpe.^[1] Her other most noted films include Parvathy Parinayam (1995), Tom & Jerry (1995), Puthukkottayile Puthumanavalan (1995), and Swapna Lokathe Balabhaskaran (1996).

Personal life

She hails from a Christian family in Palai, Kerala, India and was brought up at Thiruvalla. She is born to Jobbie and Mariyamma on 1975. She has three elder sisters, Lissy, Mary and Tessy. Her mother died when she was at grade eight.^[2] Though she was from Palai the family was settled at Thiruvananthapuram due to her father's job. She studied at Holy Angel's Convent Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram and then joined at All Saints College for higher studies and it was during that time she entered in to films. When she was studying at tenth standard she got a chance to interview Director Balachandra Menon on behalf of a local televisions channel and Menon was quite impressed by her performance during the interview. After three years when she was first year degree student he offered her the main role of his new film Ammayane Sathyam. It was a typical story that the role was of a dual type role as a young boy 'Ram Kumar Thomas' and then as girl 'Parvathy, which earned much appreciation and applause.The film was a huge success and she discontinued her studies since she became busy with movies by then. Because of an agreement with Balachandra Menon she could not accept the immediate offers there after for a particular period of time but later she was cast for Suresh Gopi's film Rudraksham which was directed by Shaji Kailas. During the sets of that film Shaji Kailas and Annie fell in love and determined to get married. She acted around fifteen movies by then. She retired from acting after getting married to director Shaji Kailas in 1996 and converted to Hinduism, adopting the name Chithra. The couple have three children—Jagannathan, Sharon, and Roshan. They are now settled in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Her last film was Mookkilla Rajyathu Murimookkan Rajavu (1996). In August 2015, she started hosting a television show Annie's Kitchen in Amrita TV.
