Boden grew up in Bonymaen, the daughter of a steelworker and a department store worker. She was a pupil at Cefn Hengoed Comprehensive and graduated from Swansea University with a degree in Chemistry and Computer Sciences.[2]

Career

After graduating, she joined Lloyds banking group. She went on to help create the Clearing House Automated Payment System (CHAPS), the UK’s first real-time payments system.[3]

From Lloyds, she went on to work for Standard Chartered Bank and UBS, before becoming Chief Information Officer for AON Corporation and later Head of EMEA, Global Transaction Banking, for ABN AMRO and RBS. As Head of EMEA, she ran a payments business across 34 countries.[4] She joined Allied Irish Banks in 2012 as Chief Operating Officer, to help turn round the bank's fortunes after the financial crisis of 2008.[5]

Starling Bank

In 2014, Boden founded Starling Bank. Two years later, Starling received its banking licence.[7] Starling is a direct member of Bacs,[8] the Faster Payments Scheme (FPS),[9] the Single European Payments Area (SEPA)[10] and the Current Account Switching Service (CASS).[11] In 2016, Starling secured a funding round of $70 million, one of the largest early stage investments for a UK technology company. In May 2017, Starling launched mobile-only current accounts, following this with mobile-only business accounts in March 2018[12] and mobile-only joint accounts in June 2018.[13] The Starling Marketplace gives customers access to third-party financial products through open APIs.[14]

Starling was voted Best British Bank and Best British Current Account at the Smart Money People awards, following a survey of 24,000 people.[15]
