Early life and education

Hicks grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana.[3] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from DePauw University, from which she later received a Distinguished Alumni Award for Management and Entrepreneurship and the Robert C. McDermond Medal for Excellence in Entrepreneurship.[4] She also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School.[5]

Career

Hicks interned during college at CID Equity Partners, a venture capital firm, where she met venture capitalist Bill Oesterle.[6] In 1995, Oesterle hired Hicks to start Columbus Neighbors, a call-in service and publication with reviews of local home and lawn services located in Columbus, Ohio.[7][3] Hicks went door-to-door, signing up consumers as members and collecting ratings of local contractors.[8][9]

After Hicks recruited over 1,000 members in Columbus within one year, the company was renamed to Angie’s List.[10][11] In 1996, the company acquired Unified Neighbors, a similar company in Indianapolis, then moved the Angie’s List's headquarters to that city in 1999.[12][13]

In 2017, IAC announced its plans to acquire Angie’s List and combine it with IAC’s HomeAdvisor to form a new publicly-traded company called ANGI Homeservices Inc.[14] Hicks became the Chief Customer Officer of ANGI Homeservices Inc., a digital marketplace service that connects consumers with service professionals for home repair, maintenance and improvement projects.[15] As of July 2016, Angie’s List offered more than 10 million verified reviews of local service providers in over 700 service categories.[16]

Hicks is a member of the Techpoint Board of Directors and a co-founder and past member of the Board of Directors of The Governor Bob Orr Indiana Entrepreneurial Fellowship Program.[17][18] She was a member of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors until 2016.[5]

Awards

Hicks has received multiple awards for her entrepreneurial achievements, as well as her leadership in both the local community and the technology field, including being named the Women Tech Founder of the Year in 2016 at the Midwest Women in Tech conference in Chicago.[19] She was awarded both the TechPoint Trailblazer Award and Harvard Business School's Alumni Achievement Award in 2017.[18][19] She also won the Indiana Commission for Women’s Torchbearer Award in March 2009 for entrepreneurial accomplishments.[18]
