Amit Paul (born in Shillong, India ) is an Indian singer. His career started by being runner up in the Indian Idol season 3.[1] He has become a budding playback singer in the Hindi film industry as well as Bengali and Nepali movies.

Early years

Amit Paul's parents are Deepak Paul and Jaya Paul.[2] They have a decades-old family garments business in Shillong which was established by his grandfather, later on maintained by his father and paternal uncles. Amit also has ancestral home in Siliguri. Amit remained in the family business of garments sales alongside his uncle Pradip Paul before Indian Idol-3 after which his individual musical career took off.From an early age, he had aspired to be a playback singer, but was never formally trained.

Indian Idol

Amit Paul participated in the third season of Indian Idol.[3] After being eliminated, he was brought back as a wild card entry. He was ultimately beaten by Prashant Tamang. He was the heart-throb of the nation whilst on the show and have had immense support and love from across the globe.

Amit’s Homecoming After Indian Idol :

To say that - would not be an overstatement; literally the city of Shillong went into a festive jubilation at the news of Amit Paul returning home to meet his people. The usually unmanned and cold streets of Shillong were packed with people and suddenly one could feel the warmth and welcome that they wanted to give to their representative at Indian Idol.

At Guwahati airport, there was a crowd of thousands of crazy fans wanting to have one glimpse of their hero: Amit Paul. From the Guwahati airport to the Bada Pani Lake, Amit halted at every 10 meters to talk and shake hands with his followers, friends and fans. At Bada Pani lake, he was welcomed with a Khasi Tribal dance. “This was a dream and now I believe that some dreams do come true”, says an over excited Amit Paul with tears in his eyes. “This is an experience of a lifetime; these moments will last in my mind forever.”

The crowd followed Amit everywhere making it look like a caravan round the city. Surely this homecoming gave a tough time for the traffic authorities in Shillong to control and monitor the crowd. There were girls who ran behind Amit’s car for over three kilometers to get one autograph!!!

After the Bada Pani Lake, Amit Paul made his way to the Air Marshall house which was crowded with localites’, who wanted to meet Amit Paul, and he came to the gate and met his fans personally. In the evening, at Jawaharlal Nehru sports complex, Amit witnessed and performed to a maddening crowd of over two lakh people. He held them spell bound with his rapturous music and mesmerizing renditions of some of the top chart busters and evergreen songs from 80’s and 90’s.

Surely girls kissing, friends hugging and the crowd wanting to shake hands with this young man shook the life out of him by the evening. But still Amit maintains, “This was the most memorable day in my life at Indian Idol”. It was because of this platform that i got this fame, love and adulation from everybody. “Indian Idol rocks!” says Amit.

At a press meet at Chief Minister's residence, Amit Paul was honoured with the title of brand ambassaor of peace of Meghalaya.

Continuing career

After Idols, Amit Paul reappeared on Indian television in the new game show Ek Se Badhkar Ek (Zee TV). This saw Amit Paul being paired with Rajshree Thakur as a singer-dancer combo. The pair lasted until the 9th week, when Rajshree had to quit on doctors orders.

Amit also appeared on K for Kishore, a song contest in which participants must try and sing like the well known Indian singer Kishore Kumar. Amit appeared as a challenger but himself exited from the show because of a minor illness during that time.

Amit Paul has performed worldwide in a number of concerts since completing Indian Idols. His overseas tours included U.S.A., U.K., Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Israel, Singapore, Kuwait, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Amit has begun to realize his dream to sing as a playback artist. He has debuted in Luck by Chance with the soft, romantic number Pyar ki Daastan, with Mahalaxmi Iyer as his co-singer. The song was written by the legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar. Reviews of the track have been positive, and the song has done well in the charts.[4] He is one of the very few Indian idol contestants to give a chartbuster song like "pyar ki dastan". Several of his songs are under production. Alongside music, Amit has his own business in various sectors and is a socialite in the Northeast. He is an active member of various social enterprises and supports causes such as children's education, disabled children and women empowerment. He has done many charity shows to support the underprivileged at home and abroad. He has also been made the state brand ambassador for North Bengal by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Amit believes in peace and prosperity and continues to keep good impact on the society and encourage youngsters for unity, peace and prosperity. He also took part as a celebrity judge in the local talent contest, "Arunachal got Talent". He takes part in many social events and have always been the crowd's favourite.

Effect on Meghalaya

The populace within the state of Meghalaya has long been divided. The discord between tribal and non-tribal members of the state has resulted in harsh words between the two, as well as outbreaks of violence. Amit Paul's success brought fame to the region, and created a sense of unity between the divide. His success has allowed both sides to come together and brought a sense of peace to the state.[5] The Meghalaya Government made him the state's Brand Ambassador of Peace, Communal Harmony and Excellence.[6]
