The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) is an international nonprofit organization that was established by the leading health organizations in the United State .[1] The organization is operating under the "cooperative agreement with the Agency for International Development".[2] The purpose of the organization is to advance the global health by strengthening local health systems and creating human resources for health purposes.[1]
History
The organization was established in 1992.[3]
In 1994, AIHA started "inter-partnership task" for the training and administration of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).[2] The purpose of this initiative is to establish EMS centers and strengthen their capacity.[2] There are EMS centers in Moscow, Georgia, Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkmenistan and in other countries.[2]
In 1995, the first "Healthy Communities" partnerships of AIHA was established.[3]
The first "Health Management Education" partnerships with Romania, Czech Republic, and Slovakia was established in 1996.[3]
In 1998, the organization started new cooperation agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).[3]
Activities
AIHA helps low and middle income countries to develop human resources and institutions for the purpose of building foundation for high quality health services through providing technical assistance based on volunteer based partnerships.[4] Their programs are based on relationship among providers of healthcare system, who aim to find solutions to the problems of the host country in their health delivery systems.[4]
AIHA trains healthcare providers; "strengthens professional healthcare associations"; and engages health professionals.[4]
The organization has achieved sustainable outcomes in more than 175 partnerships in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean.[4]
Five key pillars of AIHA
There are five key pillars of AIHA that embodies its work: "introducing new models of care and services; mobilizing communities for change; building sustainable capacity among healthcare practitioners; furthering the development of health-related professions; expanding knowledge through effective dissemination of successful programs".[5]
