Torque teno virus

Alphatorquevirus is a recently discovered genus in the new family of Anelloviridae, in group II in the Baltimore classification. It encompasses many type species of the virus formerly known as TTV, Transfusion Transmitted Virus or Torque Teno Virus, SENV, SANBAN, and others.[1]

The type species is Torque Teno Virus 1–29.

Virology

The viron is non-enveloped and isocahedral with a diameter of ~30-32 nm.

The single stranded DNA genome is ~3.8 kilobases in length.

There are 2 open reading frames: ORF1—770 codons in length—and ORF2—202 codons in length.

Taxonomy

At least 30 genotypes have been described in the literature. Isolates are numbered sequentially: Torque teno virus 1,2,3 ...

The isolates have been divided into six groups based on their genetic relatedness:

Group 1: 1–4
Group 2: 7–9
Group 3: 10–18
Group 4: 19, 20
Group 5: 5, 6
Group 6: 21, 22

These groups may eventually be elevated to species level but this is not the case at present.

Host range

By definition Alphatorquevirus infect humans.
