The Memphis Express is a professional American football team based in Memphis, Tennessee and a charter team of the Alliance of American Football.[2] It was the third of eight teams announced for the new league, which is set to play in February 2019.[3] They will play in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium[1] and will be coached by former National Football League player and head coach Mike Singletary.[4]

History

The Alliance of American Football announced the awarding of the third inaugural league team, Alliance Memphis, on May 4, 2018.[5] This announcement was followed by the May 10, 2018 announcement of Mike Singletary as the team's head coach.[4]

On July 30, 2018, the Alliance announced team Memphis had signed its first 29 players.[6] On September 20, 2018, the league announced four eastern inaugural franchises' names and logos including Memphis as the Memphis Express.[7]

On January 4, 2019, training camp will open in San Antonio.[1] The teams' season opener will be February 9, 2019.[5]

Players

Alliance Memphis' assigned area, which designates player rights, includes the following colleges, Memphis, East Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Austin Peay, UT-Chattanooga, UT-Martin, Carson-Newman, Tusculum and Lane. Players with prior pro experience are assigned from the following teams, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Bengals or the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.[6]
