Alila Hotels and Resorts[1] is a hotel management company that currently operates in Indonesia, India and Oman, with their headquarters located in Singapore. The word Alila means "surprise" in Sanskrit,[2] which is the philosophy behind its properties. Alila Hotels and Resorts adopt EarthCheck operating standards, and in 2014 entered into a strategic alliance with Commune Hotels & Resorts.[3] In addition, Alila Hotels and Resorts is part of the Global Hotel Alliance.
History
Alila Hotels and Resorts was founded in May 2001[4] when their first property, "Alila Jakarta", opened its doors in Indonesia’s capital city. The brand was founded primarily by Mark Edleson,[5] who today is the president of the group. Alila now operates 11 properties in Asia and is set to open another 17 hotels before 2018.
Alila's headquarters in Singapore was declared carbon neutral,[6] and in 2009 Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali became the first hotel built to strict EarthCheck standards[7] in Indonesia.[8]
Properties
At present Alila Hotels and Resorts has a portfolio of 11 properties located in Indonesia, India and Oman. These hotels and resorts are also members of Design Hotels,[9][10] which features properties that showcase modern design.
In December 2012, Alila Hotels and Resorts added a liveaboard Phinisi sailing ship to their portfolio named the Alila Purnama.[11] It was the brand’s first luxury liveaboard ship. At present, the ship sails over the Indonesian waters of Raja Ampat and the Komodo area.
Reopening October 1, 2017, the Ventana Big Sur, formerly Ventana Inn & Spa, will operate as part of Alila Hotels, their first US property.
Partnerships
In May 2014, Alila Hotels and Resorts and Commune Hotels & Resorts[12] announced their new partnership.[13] Commune Hotels & Resorts owns Joie de Vivre Hotels,[14] Thompson Hotels[15] and tommie.[16]
