Alia Farid

Alia Farid (born 1985) is an artist who works across the disciplines of art, architecture, and urban anthropology.[1] Her research-driven practice investigates experiences, institutions, and landscapes, particularly in her dual homelands of the Middle East and Latin America.[2][3]

Background

Farid was raised by two architects, her mother a Puerto Rican architect and her father a Kuwaiti architect.[4] She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from La Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico (Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico), a Master of Science in Visual Studies from MIT (Cambridge, MA), and a Masters in Museum Studies and Critical Theory from the Programa d’Estudis Independents at MACBA (Barcelona).[5]

Work and career

Farid's artistic practice incorporates a variety of media and approaches including video, installation, and drawing.[6] A consistent research interest found in her work is an investigation of how informal networks and knowledge can emerge in sites that are often unnoticed or invisible.[1] Her curatorial work also manifests this approach, as exemplified by her the project "Acquiring Modernity" that was presented as the Kuwait pavilion at the 14th Venice International Architecture Biennale in 2014.[7] The exhibition, film, and publication, commissioned by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters in Kuwait, assembled a team of 23 researchers to study the development and legacy of modernism in the architecture of Kuwait, with a particular focus on the Kuwait National Museum.[8] Farid's first major solo exhibition "Between Dig and Display" took place at the Galerie Imane Farès in Paris in 2017 and continued her interrogation of the role of museums.[9] Also incorporating research from the Kuwait National Museum, her personal archive, and a variety of other sources, the exhibition assembled disparate objects that highlight the complexity of identity in Kuwait particularly following the Gulf War.[4]

Alia Farid and Aseel AlYacoub were selected to create the first commissioned artwork for new Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai.[10] "Contrary Life: A Botanical Light Garden Devoted to Trees" is a site-specific installation that will create a botanic garden with hybrid trees based on local plants also using artificial lights.[11]

In addition to her artistic career, she has worked for arts and cultural institutions in Kuwait, including serving as Director of Al Sabah Art & Design and supporting the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters under the Heritage and Museums Department on public programs and partnerships.[5]
