Alexander Karley

Commander Alexander Karley RN (17851859) was a 19th-century British naval commander.

Life

He was born on 8 September 1785.

In 1814 he became Master of HMS Forester.[1]

From February 1828 he commanded HMS Apollo acting as a troopship during the First Opium War in China. He was replaced by Captain C. Frederick.[2][3]

In 1832 he was commander of HMS Atholl.[4]

In the 1840s he appears as Assistant Master of Chatham Docks.[5]

In 1846 he retired to 4 Clarendon Crescent in Edinburgh.[6]

In retirement he served as Treasurer of the Scottish Coast Mission, alongside committee members such as Sir John Melville, Rear Admiral H. Dundas and Admiral Francis Erskine Loch.[7]

He died in Edinburgh on 22 December 1859. He is buried in Warriston Cemetery just east of the central vaults.

Family

He was married to Agnes Allen (b.1786).

He is thought to be the maternal grandfather of Captain Alexander Karley Woodrow RN (b. circa 1850).[8]
