The Al-Tanf offensive (2016) was an offensive launched by the Free Syrian Army backed by the US against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), aiming to capture the Syrian border post Al-Tanf. Al-Tanf had been captured by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant from the Syrian government in May 2015 and had been to shift militants and resources across the border.[3]

On 3 March 2016, the offensive to capture Al-Tanf began. After several hours of fighting the Syrian rebels captured the border post.[4][5]

A counter-attack took place, which led to ISIL recapturing the post several hours later.[6] However the fighting continued until the day after.[7]
