Ahsan Kareem

Ahsan Kareem is the Robert M. Moran Professor of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences and the Director of the NatHaz Modeling Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame and past Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame.[1][2]

He is a former President of the American Association for Wind Engineering and currently serves as the elected President of the International Association for Wind Engineering.[3][4]

Awards, honors, and memberships

Ahsan Kareem has been awarded numerous honors including the United States of America’s Presidential Young Investigator Award from the White House Office of Science and Technology[5][6] A recipient of the Theodore von Karman Medal, Robert H.Scanlan Medal,[7] James Croes Medal[8] Jack E. Cermak Medal[9] and State-of-the-Art Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers[10] and Alan G. Davenport Medal from the International Association for Wind Engineering for contributions to the dynamics of structures and dynamic wind effects on tall, deep and long span structures, which is an unmatched recognition.[11] Dr. Kareem was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2009.[12] In 2009, he received University of Notre Dame’s Research Achievement Award.[13] In 2010, he was elected as a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.[14] In 2010, he was elected as a Distinguished Member of ASCE.[15] Dr. Kareem was appointed Honorary Professor of Tongji University,[16] Shanghai, PROC, 2010 and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University[17] in October 2012 and Southwest Jiaotong University,[18] Chengdu in August 2013. In 2011, he was inducted to the Offshore Technology Conference Hall of Fame.[19] In 2012, he was appointed by the State Council of China as a High-End Consultant to Tongji University.[20][21] In 2013, he received the International Association of Structural Safety and Reliability Distinguished Research Award in recognition of long-standing accomplishments in the field of safety and reliability.[22] In 2013, he was among the initial inductees of the Fellows of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE.[23] He is the 2013 Scruton Lecturer at the Institution of Civil Engineers England.[24] He has served as Chair of the ASCE’s Engineering Mechanics Institute and Structural Engineering Institute’s Technical Activities.[25]
