Ahmed Magdy (actor)

Ahmed Magdy (born 4 May 1986)[1] is an Egyptian-Algerian actor and director.

Early life

Born in Egypt, in 1986, Magdy's paternal grandmother is of Turkish origin and his grandfather is Egyptian,[2] whilst his maternal grandparents have Arab and Berber origins.[2] He grew up and lived in Egypt and spent his childhood holidays in Algeria.[2]

Magdy graduated from the law faculty at Ain Shams University, in Cairo, and then joined the al-Tamy theater troupe and worked as an actor, assistant director and trainer.[1]

Career

His first film was the independent six-minute 2007 documentary work "Magra al-Seil" ("Riverbed"). He then took part in a workshop entitled "al-Zatt wa al-Madina – al-Qahira" ("The Self and the City - Cairo") which was produced by the European Union and al-Sammat production company, which involved the production of a documentary called "Zeezo". After joining the Cairo Jesuit Cinema School, he directed three low budget short titles. His graduation project, "Keika Sagheera" ("Small Cake"), received an honor from the judging committee at the Algeria Independent Cinema Festival.[1]

Overall, Magdy has taken part in more than 30 independent works. He has directed "Illa al-Bahr…" ("To the Sea…"), which was produced by the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies department at the American University in Cairo. He has also acted in "’Asafeer al-Neel" ("Birds of the Nile") which is an adaptation of the novel by renowned writer Ibrahim Aslan.[1]

Personal life

Madgy enjoys photography and can also play numerous instruments. He also practices contemporary dance.[3]

He holds dual citizenship of Algeria and Egypt.[2]
