Agni Pariksha (alternatively Agni Pareeksha or Agni Pariksha or Agnipariksha, Bengali: অগ্নিপরীক্ষা, English The Test Of Fire) is a 1954 Indian Bengali-language romantic drama film directed by Agradoot and starring Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. The film was adapted from novel of same name. The movie was remade in Hindi in 1967 as Chhoti Si Mulaqat also starring Uttam Kumar.

Plot

Tapasi is a 13 year old girl who is quite religious and very fond of her thakuma ( grandma) . Her father is a zaminder. She along with her father, mother, thakuma and two brothers Siddhartha & Amitabh lives in Kolkata. Tapasi's mother, Chitra, is very ambitious and despises the traditional ways of her mother-in-law. However she cannot despise openly as her mother-in-law is the property holder after her husband's death.

Once during the vacations Tapasi along with her brothers go to stay in their country house with thakuma. Her parents were to join them later. Thakuma takes them all to the house of another zaminder of that village, Kanti Chandra Mukherjee, who was a very good friend of her late husband. It had been decided between the two friends that they will get their children married to each other as a sign of their friendship. However, as fate would have it, both of them had sons. Kanti requests her to get Tapasi's married to her grandson Bulu when they become of age. Bulu is a 18yr old boy studying in Presidency college , Kolkata. His parents died when he was very young. All he had was his dadu . Kanti was very worried for Bulu as his health was deteriorating day by day .Thakuma falls in a dilemma and tells Kanti that she needs to take permission from Tapasi's parents.

Later on, Kanti falls very ill and pleads thakuma to get them married. Thakuma feeling helpless and pitiful of his situation agrees. Bulu and Tapasi's gets married.

Tapasi's parents come to know of this. Chitra vehemently opposes. She erases all signs of marriage and takes her back to Kolkata . Thakuma , depressed at the turn of events renounces worldly life. She leaves all property in the name of Tapasi and goes to Kasi. However Tapasi had accepted that marriage by heart. She tries to find Bulu. Bulu to keeps on thinking about Tapasi. Tapasi's father although disheartened by the turns of events, tells her to never forget the sanctity of marriage. He dies due to heart attack after some days.

Years pass by, Tapasi is now a well educated girl, socialite and an aspiring singer.on

e day whole going for a trekking on a fogy day, she meets Kiriti Mukherjee( Uttam Kumar) . Kiriti is a fan of Tapasi's songs and asks her to sing one . She obliges. Tapasi is charmed by his gentleman like conduct . She is later informed by Lily that Kiriti is a very rich and an engineer by profession. Slowly Tapasi starts falling for him. well-educateandgirl, goes to a hill station for a holiday and meets a rich young man, named Kiriti. They fall in love. However, Tapasi had already married Bulu, a teenage village Zamindar, although her mother could not accept the wedding and brought her back home. Tapasi's guilt stays with her. She decides to get married again, but her brother reminds her about her past. Tapasi approaches her grandmother for advice. Her grandmother reminds her about Sita's "Agni pariksha" in the Ramayana, and how Sita triumphed over every obstacle. She hopes Tapasi will also emerge victorious after going through a similar test. Tapasi is determined to face the truth and she returns to her old village. She tries to meet Bulu, but sees Kiriti in front of her. She realises that Kiriti is Bulu, her long-lost love

Remakes

The film was remade in Telugu and Tamil as Mangalya Balam and Manjal Mahimai respectively. The film was remade in Hindi as Chhoti Si Mulaqat with Uttam Kumar reprising his role.[2]
