Adrian Cheng Chi-kong (Chinese: 鄭志剛, born 1979) is a wealthy businessman in Hong Kong, the third generation heir to multi-billionaire Cheng Yu-tung, the founder of the New World and Chow Tai Fook property and jewellery empire.[2][3][4] He is the executive vice-chairman and general manager of the Hong Kong-listed New World Development,[5] executive director of the listed Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group, and founder of the K11 brand.[6][7] In 2017, he launched waterfront redevelopment project Victoria Dockside in Hong Kong. [8] Cheng was on 40 under 40 (Fortune magazine) list , and in 2017, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.[9]

Family background and education

Born in 1979, Cheng is the grandson and designated heir to Cheng Yu-tung,[10][11] whose holdings were worth an estimated US$16.6 billion shortly before his death in 2016, according to Forbes.[12] Family holdings include the Chow Tai Fook jewellery chain and New World Development group.[11][13]

Cheng majored in East Asian studies at Harvard University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree before going to Japan to study Japanese culture for a year.[13]

Business career

Following a two-year stint at UBS AG[6][10] Cheng joined the family business,[13] becoming Executive Vice-Chairman at New World Development in 2015,[14] the biggest part of the family’s private Chow Tai Fook Holdings empire. He also serves as an executive director and board member.[10][15][16][17][18]

K11 brand

Cheng introduced the concept of "museum-retail"[19] by founding the K11 brand in 2008. Cheng's first K11 museum-retail mall opened in Tsim Sha Tsui (Hong Kong) in 2009, and later a branch was opened in Shanghai. K11 museum-retail shopping centers currently have branches in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Wuhan. In 2017, Cheng led the Victoria Dockside redevelopment on land held by New World since the 1970s, at a cost of $2.6 billion.[20][21][22]

He founded the K11 Art Foundation (KAF) in 2010, a vehicle for art promotion within the malls, serving as a platform for Chinese artists and their works.[23] He initiated collaborations between the foundation and international museums and art institutions such as Palais de Tokyo in Paris[24] and Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London,[25] showcasing Chinese artists. The foundation also has an art village in Wuhan.[26]

Cheng was included in ArtReview Power100 in 2014 (ranked number 100)[27] and 2015 (ranked number 76).[28][29]
